How to lubricate hard-to-open windows? Useful insights by an aluminium windows manufacturer

October 31, 2022

If you have old windows, with time they may be difficult to open and close. Dust and dirt often get lodged in the tracks, making the windows hard to open and close. Getting the windows to glide open and close smoothly again is quite easy – you just have to remove the debris and lubricate the tracks. As one of the leading aluminium windows manufacturers, we share with you a few useful insights on cleaning and lubricating hard-to-open windows:

Things you will need

  • Microfibre towels
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Vinegar or all-purpose cleaner
  • Hot water
  • Silicone-based lubricant

Clean the windows tracks

Step 1: Open the window as far as possible to access the tracks. Wipe the tracks with dry cloth.

Step 2: Vacuum the remaining dirt and dust.

Step 3: Create a mild cleaning solution by mixing three-fourths of a cup of vinegar in a bucket half full with water.

Step 3: Dip a cloth in the solution and use it to clean away stubborn dirt buildup. You can also use an all-purpose cleaner. Spray all purpose cleaner on tracks and let it sit for  10 minutes and then wipe it with a damp cloth.

Step 4: Rinse the cloth with clean water and wipe it over the window tracks.

Note: While cleaning the windows, do not use abrasive cleaners. Also, avoid using knives , steel wool or sharp objects to remove the buildup dirt.

Lubricate the windows:

Step 1: Use a silicone-based lubricant or a lubricant that has been recommended by the window manufacturer. When in doubt, check the product manual to find out which lubricant to use. Using the wrong lubricant may jam the rollers.

Note:  Always apply the lubricant on the cloth first. Spraying lubricant directly onto the windows can stain the frames and the glass. The greasy mess on the frames and glass can be difficult to remove.

Step 2: Open and close the window several times to distribute the lubricant uniformly. Apply more lubricant, if needed.
